The King Midas

The King MidasShort tale: The King Midas

Once upon a time there was a very good king named Midas.

Only he had one flaw: he wanted to have all the gold in the world for himself.

One day King Midas did a favor for a god named Dionysus. The god said to him:

– Whatever you ask of me I will grant you.

– I want everything I touch to turn to gold,” said Midas.

– What a silly wish, Midas! Think about it, Midas, think about it.

– That’s all I want.

– So be it, then,” said the god Dionysus.

And the clothes that Midas wore, a branch that he touched, the doors of his house turned to gold. Even the dog that came out to greet him became a golden statue.

And Midas began to worry. The worst thing was that when he wanted to eat, all the food turned to gold. Then Midas could stand it no longer. He ran away, frightened, in search of the god Dionysus.

– I told you, Midas, said the god Dionysus, I told you, but now I cannot free you from the gift I gave you. Go to the river and get into the water. If you are not free when you come out of the river, you will be hopeless.

Midas ran to the river and plunged into its waters. He stayed there for a long time. Then he came out quite frightened. The branches of the tree he deliberately touched were still green and fresh.

Midas was free! From then on the king lived in a hut he had built himself in the forest. And there he died peacefully like the humblest peasant.
