One beautiful morning, Princess Pocahontas was playing with her friends, Miko the raccoon and Flit the hummingbird. Suddenly, she noticed a strange ship approaching the coast, very close to her village.
From a rock, Pocahontas could see many white men getting off the ship. They were loaded with shovels and picks. These men were looking for gold, and they seemed ready to destroy everything in their path in order to get it.
Powhatan, Pocahontas’ father, and the other warriors of the tribe already knew of the arrival of the white man. They were very worried because their lands were not being respected, and the settlers were behaving like real enemies.
But one day, Pocahontas met one of those white men. The young man’s name was John Smith. Their eyes met and, from the first moment, love was born between them.
Pocahontas and John were very happy when they were together. She wanted to show him everything she knew about the land that was so beautiful and different to John.
Grandmother Sauce, a magic tree of the Indians, also understood that the young man was not her enemy. She thought that, although they belonged to very different worlds, love could unite all races.
Naloma, Pocahontas’ best friend, saw John as just another white man and feared what might happen to the young princess. For this reason, she decided to warn Kocum, who confronted John Smith.
That terrible fight had serious consequences. Kocum died accidentally, and Pocahontas’ tribe condemned John to die at dawn.
Pocahontas was desperate. She loved John Smith, but she had to be true to her people and her father’s commands. Grandmother Sauce advised her to listen only to the voice of her heart.
She did so, and prevented John Smith from dying just as the colonists were on their way to the execution site to free their companion.
Chief Powhatan listened to his daughter and spared John’s life to avoid the fight. Governor Ratcliffe fired at Powhatan and John was wounded while trying to save his life.
To heal, John had to return to London with his companions, and had to be separated from Pocahontas. The two belonged to different worlds.
Thus, from the top of the cliff, Pocahontas watched as the ship that one day brought him to her took John Smith away from her land… and from her life.

Reflection on the story: This story depicts the love story between Pocahontas, an Indian princess, and John Smith, a young white settler. Despite coming from different worlds, love blossoms between them and defies the barriers of culture and race. However, the realities of the times and conflicts between Indian tribes and white settlers jeopardize their relationship and, in the end, force them to say goodbye.
The story also highlights the importance of listening to our hearts and acting courageously in defense of our feelings, even if it means defying the expectations and values of our society. Grandmother Willow, as a symbol of nature’s wisdom, is an important guide for Pocahontas throughout the story.
In addition, the story shows the negative impact that human ambition and greed can have, represented in this case by settlers seeking gold and disrespecting the land and the rights of Indian tribes.
