The tin soldier was one of twenty-five soldiers in a box. They were all the same, except for him, who was missing a leg because he had run out of lead when he was made. But that didn’t matter to him, because he was very brave and proud.
One day, the tin soldier saw a paper ballerina on a shelf that he liked very much. She also had only one leg and seemed to be dancing on the tip of one foot. The tin soldier thought she was the most beautiful in the world and fell in love with her.
But there was a problem: between them was an evil goblin who lived in a box of surprises. The goblin didn’t want the tin soldier to go near the ballerina and said to him:
– If you dare to look at her again, I will punish you.
The tin soldier ignored him and continued to look at the ballerina with admiration. The goblin was furious and decided to take revenge.
That night, when everyone was asleep, the goblin got out of his box and pushed the tin soldier out of the window. The poor soldier fell to the ground and lay on the street.
The next day, a little boy passed by who saw him and picked him up. The boy took him home and put him in a paper boat. Then he put the boat in a gutter through which the rainwater was running.
The boat began to sail down the gutter and the tin soldier felt very sad to think that he would never see the ballerina again. But he did not give up and stood his ground.
The boat passed under a bridge and there were two rats who wanted to take a toll on the tin soldier. The soldier had nothing to give them and the rats gave chase.
– ¡Help! – shouted the tin soldier.
But no one heard him. The boat kept going until it came to a river. The river was very wide and deep and the boat began to sink.
The tin soldier got all wet and thought he was going to drown. But then a big fish appeared and swallowed the soldier along with the boat.
– ¡Help! – the tin soldier shouted again.
But no one heard him. The fish swam down the river until it was caught by a fisherman. The fisherman took the fish to the market and sold it to a cook.
The cook took the fish to the kitchen and opened it with a knife. To her surprise, she found the tin soldier inside.
– ¡What a strange thing! – exclaimed the cook – A tin soldier in the stomach of a fish.
And she carefully picked it up and put it on the table. It turned out that that kitchen was the same one where the paper ballerina lived. The goblin had had the fish caught by the fisherman and sold to the cook to separate them forever.
But as fate would have it, the tin soldier and the ballerina met again. When the soldier saw the ballerina on the ledge, he couldn’t believe it. It was her, his beloved ballerina.
– ¡I found you! – exclaimed the tin soldier.
– ¡I have found you! – replied the ballerina.
And they looked at each other with great joy and excitement. After a moment, a strong wind blew open the window and sent the tin soldier straight into the fireplace, which was lit.
Sadly, the tin soldier began to slowly melt under the heat of the flames, but was comforted by the sight of his ballerina.
In an unexpected turn of events, another gust of wind blew the paper ballerina into the flames and the two ended up together in the fire, in a final dance that looked like a beautiful ballet.
However, they managed to have one last moment to look at each other before the fire consumed them completely.
The next day, under the ashes, a piece of molten lead heart was found that glittered like glitter and was covered in tulle and silk fabrics.
